This is a dissertation completed in 1963: "Studies on the iconography of the Meroitic royal family and studies on problems of chronology of the kingdom of Meroe". The work represents the basis of many later works of the author. The book also reviews the chronologies presented by other scholars - notably those of George A. Reisner, Dows Dunham and Hintze Fritz. The chronology presented in the book also forms the basis of the catalogue "Africa in Antiquity", Brooklyn in 1978. The study on the royal iconography in the Meroitic period represents the first systematic compilation of iconographic elements of the Meroitic rulers. The final chapter evaluates the relations between Ethiopia and the mysterious land of Punt. It is an early approach to see the kingdom of Meroe not only in the context of Egypt, but also as part of Africa.
