Recent developments in the study of early man have turned away from analysing fossil remains as evidence of a single and inevitable process of evolution towards homo sapiens and instead stress the varying rates of human evolutionary change in different environments and the development of different systems of social organization and technological expertize as a response to differing environmental pressures.
