The context books in the Key Stage 3 part of STEP complement the Key Stage 3 core book and are integral to any STEP Key Stage 3 scheme of work. They contain longer structured teaching inputs which have been specifically designed to increase key aspects of the design and technology capability of pupils. The themes in the context books can be used interchangeably with the themes in the Key Stage 3 core book. Each of the context books covers all five of the National Curriculum contexts. The titles of the books are What a Performance!, Food for Thought, Mmm, That's Nice!, Hindsight and People and Places.
STEP 5-16 Design and Technology is a major educational development from the Staffordshire Design and Technology Education Programme. It is designed to help teachers to deliver the national curriculum for design and technology. What a performance! focuses on the performing arts as a way of teaching electronics, textiles, pneumatics and business studies as well as looking at cultural issues.
That's nice! is the third of the context books for the key stage 3 national curriculum course, STEP 5-16 Design and Technology. It develops work on the design process, from initial ideas through to modelling and prototyping those ideas. The book focuses on the various stages of developing a new product, from initial thoughts to prototyping a product. It is also concerned with the aesthetic aspect of designing. It is designed to help teachers to deliver the national curriculum for design and technology. Hindsight is the fourth of the context books for key stage 3, it is also suitable for use with key stages 2 and 4. The focus is on the historical development of technology and the following topics are covered: building materials; the components of a home; hygiene; clothing; communication; transport; and power. Hindsight contains a range of practical activities related to the text, including design-and-make tasks and gathering further information on a subject. Biographical details of key people are included, and the book is fully indexed.
