Literacy probe comprises two diagnostic tests focusing on the basic literacy skills of children who are performing at a level two years or more below their chronological age. The tests aim to provide an indication of the child's literacy strengths and areas where their skills are weaker and require attention. The tests are designed for administration at two crucial stages in the child's reading development. Test 1 is aimed at Year 3 children (ages 7-8) gaining level 1 or below at the end of Key Stage 1. Test 2 targets Year 4 pupils (ages 8-9) working at or below National Curriculum level 2b. Each test is available in parallel forms A and B, enabling the teacher to retest and assess progress throughout the year. The accompanying teacher's handbook gives practical advice on interpretation, teaching strategies and structuring a follow-on remediation programme.
