Progression is built into each unit, between each book and across the course as a whole. The book provides material for a full year's work divided into six half-termly units and the three books arranged across three years establish, revisit and consolidate key skills. The units cover the full range of curriculum requirements and work on basic skills is embedded in the context of purposeful reading, writing, speaking and listening activities and additional language-specific units. Full access is provided to suitable pre-20th century and contemporary literary and non-literary texts.
The "Hodder English Gold 4" course combines access to a quality English programme at KS4 with emphasis on basic skills support for pupils working at levels 2 to 4 of the National Curriculum. The course has been constructed in association with the Basic Skills Agency to ensure readability and accessibility, while offering students full coverage of the English National Curriculum. This study book can be used in conjunction with units from the coursebook to provide integrated coverage of English and English Literature in preparation for GCSE or Certificate of Achievement qualifications. The book is a study of John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men". It contains group and individual activities which provide access to the text and help to develop students' understanding of the plot. Drawing on debate and close reading, students should be able to engage with the characters and think about the serious themes addressed by the novel. There are also opportunities for producing written coursework in a variety of forms.
This cassette contains readings of extracts from poetry, prose and drama in the "Hodder English Gold 1, 2, 3". It also includes full short stories and poems. The aim is for pupils to listen to the cassette and then read the text, confident in the knowledge of what to expect from the text. It also provides an opportunity to fulfil many of the speaking and listening requirements of the National Curriculum for English. Pupils at very low reading levels should also benefit from being able to listen to the tape and then attempt activities. The cassette is part of a three-book English programme aimed at special needs students at Key Stage 3.
