This book looks at the many different forms that a family can take and examines the social changes that have had an effect on family life and its traditional support systems. It describes how crises such as illness, bereavement, debt, divorce and domestic violence can threaten the stability and well-being of family members. It offers advice on strategies for surviving family crises and suggests ways in which family life can be strengthened.

It considers why some young people attempt suicide and discusses the effects of suicide on family members. It gives advice on how to seek help to overcome the emotional difficulties that can lead to self-harm or even to suicide, and to tackle the underlying issues that may have given rise to these feelings.
