Picture a hotel room in 1948 Singapore. A dispute is under way between black marketeer and thief Russell Pearce and an associate, which ends up with Pearce's murder. Fast forward to present day Pennsylvania where young Doug Pearce has always found stories about his Uncle Russ fascinating. So, when a letter arrives from an old friend of his uncle inviting him to Toronto, Doug accepts. On arrival, he finds himself enlisted by the wealthy and glamorous Edna to play detective and solve the murder of his uncle and exonerate the chief suspect. But by the end of his first day, Doug knows he's made a mistake and it becomes clear that someone else is interested in his quest. From Morocco to Egypt to Bahrain to Singapore, Doug stumbles on facing danger all the way.

At 27, Jason Tally of Corning, New York, leads an orderly life, processing loans for a mortgage company. The highlight of his life is his friendship with Sriram Sundaram and his lively wife, Vidya. One night, Sriram secretly confides he's planning a trip home to India to visit his mother and asks Jason to look after her gift, a gorgeous red silk sari. The very next evening Jason arrives home to sirens and cops - Sriram and Vidya are dead. The cops call it a murder/suicide. Grieving, Jason decides to fulfill Sriram's quest and impulsively books himself a trip to India. There's a gorgeous young woman aboard, a train buff with an escape plan, and before he knows it, Jason has cast aside all semblance of order and embarked with Rachel on a perilous journey, but, he doesn't realize how dangerous it will be, since only now does he learn that Sriram, a computer genius, was believed to have sold out his colleagues. Jason has sent details of his trip to Sriram's e-mail list, hoping to meet up with his dead friend's past. But when he does...
