George Grote's "History of Greece" still stands as one of the great works of Greek scholarship. Translated into French and German, the "History" was one of the most influential factors in shaping the European conception of ancient Greece during the 19th century. This is a complete reprint of the 10-volume 4th edition. Published posthumously in 1872, it is considered the best edition, containing a portrait, maps and plans plus a note by Mrs Harriet Grote. Grote's exposition was based on a thorough knowledge of the subject and, as a friend of James Mill, John Stuart Mill, Jeremy Bentham and David Recardo, a background in politics, philosophy and economics. The "History" is written in an accessible style, with portraits of Greek political and philosophical thought.
George Grote (1794-1871), was a well-known historian of Greece and parliamentarian. His "Aristotle" (1872) was the result of many years of study, following the publication of "The History of Greece" (1846-56) and "Plato and the Other Companions of Sokrates" (1865, 3 vols). At the time of writing, such a comprehensive account of the subject had never before been attempted and "Aristotle" remains one of the most important contributions to the history of ancient thought. Grote's "Aristotle" was to remain unfinished at his death, and the first edition was published under the editorship of Alexander Bain and G. Croom Robertson a year later. The second edition, reprinted here in two volumes, was published in 1880 with the addition of two important essays on the "Ethics" and the "Politics" of Aristotle, the material for which was discovered among Grote's papers. To the chapters on the life of Aristotle, the Aristotlean canon and a critical study of the logical treatises, the editors added a section on De Anima, orginally published in Bain's "Senses and Intellect" (1868). The Appendix contains four papers rerpinted from Bain's "Mental and Moral Science" (1868).
These writings were collated by the editors from Grote's notes and references.
