All opposition having been crushed, he has begun to remake the world in his depraved image. The only hope of overthrowing him lies in Nish, whom the oppressed peoples of the world see as a messianic figure. They have named him the Deliverer for, as Nish was dragged away to prison a decade ago, he wildly promised to return and cast down his father. Unfortunately Nish is powerless and without allies. But worse, his father wants Nish to become his lieutenant and become as corrupt as he is. Jal-Nish offers Nish everything he has ever desired and, faced with the unbearable alternative of another ten years in prison, he isn't sure he can resist the temptation.

Beset by false friends and the weight of a world's expectations, Nish flees his father, the God-Emperor - always searching for the means to orchestrate his downfall. If their fragile partnership survives, they may have a chance to save themselves and their land. The group must find a hidden tower in a barren arctic wilderness and somehow convince the dread Numinator, who despises all humanity, to come to their aid.

And what of the different futures projected in the Pit of Possibilities? Can they, and should they, trust its portents? They have nothing to lose but their hope - a frail weapon in a war upon a god.

The Destiny Of The Dead

by Ian Irvine

Published 15 January 2009

Nish and his remaining allies are trapped on the Range of Ruin, surrounded by the relentless army of his father, the God-Emperor. And Nish's choices seem limited: a humiliating surrender, or a suicidal fight to the death. Yet Nish must fight, and win, as he's needed to counter an unprecedented threat facing the whole of Santhenar.

The danger is Stilkeen, a shape-shifting being, who has erupted from the void consumed by a need for retribution. Its chthonic power was stolen in ages past - and Stilkeen wants it back. But the chthonic fire Stilkeen sensed has now escaped to run wild through Santhenar's Antarctic territories. Even if Nish defeats his father, there may be no way to stop the fire, or Stilkeen, before everything is consumed.
