George's grandma is ill, so he and his mum and dad have moved into her house to look after her. George is bored, lonely and resentful towards his family. But then he discovers the Goffins – Lofty and Eave – two most unusual people who live secretly in grandma's attic. They have used all the family's old junk to create a home for themselves, but George soon finds out it can tell him about his ancestors as well – with a little help from his new friends. They have a strange way of talking – and an even stranger way of procuring food! But as they show George more and more of their rooftop world, they teach him to be more confident and caring, which makes for a much happier family life.
Lofty and Eave's family have to move out of their belfry home – and fast. "Olden-day diggers" are coming to excavate Roman treasure, and the Goffins can't afford to be caught. The Goffins have a plan, involving a meeting with Arch at long last – but with George and Rex helping out, things don't always work out as planned. Might Grandma save the day?
George is so worried about having to go on stage, he can't sleep. But Eave sees his predicament as a chance for a daring overnight visit to their estranged family: he can borrow Grandmuppy Cloister's judge's costume for the play. For their adventure to succeed, Eave has to pretend to be a French schoolboy, and Lofty a German brain surgeon – showing George that acting can be a lot of fun!

In the adventures that ensue, George learns more about his family history and more about himself, and it becomes clear that his Christmas might not be as lonely as he first thought.
