Technology in 1990

by Royal Society

Published 7 February 1985
This volume reviews recent advances in the understanding of the chemistry of cement-based materials, the structure-property relations, the improvements in properties that have been achieved so far and consideration of potential new applications for such materials.

This volume provides a summary of the present status of remote sensing research and its diverse applications: remote sensing of the land surface is used widely in geology, mineral exploration, assessment of land use, and hydrology; observations of the ocean surface can provide data on wind and wave structure, surface colour and temperature with applications to climate research, shipping, offshore operations and fisheries.

Molecular Biology Course

by Royal Society

Published 7 February 1985
This volume gives a 'state of the art' description of our current knowledge of the relation between the known properties of some of the protein components of the cytoskeletal system, the manner in which they assemble and interact within the cell, and the detailed characteristics of the cell movements that occur.

Mathematical Genetics

by Royal Society

Published 7 February 1985
This book comprises the papers presented at a Royal Society Discussion Meeting in April 1983 in recognition of the outstanding contribution made by R. A. Fisher to the subject of mathematical genetics.

Richard Susskind brings together in one volume 11 significant essays on the application of IT to legal practice and the administration of justice, including key topics such as knowledge management and the impact of e-commerce and electronic government. This edition includes a new preface, in which Susskind puts forward his views on the burst of the dotcom bubble, offers an extension to his grid to cover in-house lawyers, and comments on the next big things in this area: e-learning, document assembly, online dispute resolution, e-mail management and matter-centric systems.

This book discusses the measurement of microwave background and other astronomical data that have a bearing on the Big Bang. This leads on to the new ideas of how matter formed according to the grand unified theories and to discussions of the origin of the apparent isotropy of the Universe.

Marine Technology 1990

by Royal Society

Published 4 April 1985
The papers in this volume describe some of the more significant developments in marine technology, and assess their potential for the exploitation of marine resources (including the minerals on or under the seabed) and for improved observation of the ocean.

Results Air-Sea Project

by Royal Society

Published 7 February 1985
This volume presents the results of detailed meteorological and oceanographic observations made in an area of deep water around 59 N and 12 30'W. It will be of particular interest to meteorologists and oceanographers concerned with boundary layer processes, especially those pursuing the prospect of quantitative remote sensing of near-surface meteorological and oceanographic variables.

Optical Bistability

by Royal Society

Published 25 September 1986
This volume surveys the enormous potential of the phenomenon of optical bistability in the development of a new and large range of all-optical devices. Predictions have been made of all-optimal signal processing in association with optical communications; multiplexing and demultiplexing using bistable optical switches; parallel optical processing of either coherent or incoherent optical images without intermediary electronics by using two-dimensional bistable arrays, and all-optical computer circuitry - photonic logic - operating at speeds perhaps one thousand times that of machines based on electronic switches.

Oncogenes: Role Grth

by Royal Society

Published 25 September 1986
This volume describes studies on the structure and function of a selection of oncogenes that exemplify the great conceptual advances of our present knowledge. The discovery of viral oncogenes and their cellular homologues has provided the first indications of the genetic alterations at the heart of neoplasia.

New Develpmnts Solns

by Royal Society

Published 25 September 1986
In recent years nonlinear differential equations of the type indicated by the keyword 'soliton' have been appearing in a surprising variety of branches of pure and applied mathematics and physics. The articles presented give a representative sample both of the basic mathematical theory and of some of the applications of soliton equations. The authors have written their articles in a manner that should make them comprehensible to a wide audience.

Technology in the 1990s

by Royal Society

Published 31 March 1988
This volume reviews recent advances in the understanding of the chemistry of cement-based materials, the structure-property relations, the improvements in properties that have been achieved so far and consideration of potential new applications for such materials.

Industrialization Space

by Royal Society

Published 27 March 1986
This book draws together 14 papers from some of the leading experts in the world on different aspects of space where the industrialization process is either already well in hand, or poised to evolve. The relationships of each technical aspect to the other, as well as the financial and political sectors of activity, are demonstrated clearly by the content of the speakers' papers.

This book reports the Discussion Meeting of the Royal Society at which academic, naval and industrial research workers brought together the many aspects of raised environmental pressure and reviewed recent developments. It will be of value and interest to researchers in most basic and applied biological and medical sciences, as well as to the amateur diver.

by Royal Society

Published 25 September 1986
This collection of papers describes many novel materials with unusual properties that have been produced within the last decade or so, and include conducting polymers, molecular metals, transparent ferromagnets and organic molecular superconductors.
