This report presents the results of BSRIA's research into the potential benefits of pre-cooling in mechanically-cooled buildings. It provides guidance on the application of pre-cooling, and demonstrates its potential through case studies. A building appraisal procedure is included which enables building operators to determine the potential for pre-cooling in specific applications. There are also details on simple pre-cool control strategies, and the possible problems that can affect performance.

This guidance note has been written to enable building operators to: compare their building with current recommended practice; identify whether occupant complaints are caused by poor control; and rectify controls-related problems. It demonstrates the influence of building controls on indoor environmental quality (IEQ), in terms of temperature, humidity and ventilation. The note also presents recommendations for control practice, control setpoints and control zones. A "building surgery" deals with a range of typical occupant complaints and supplies a flowchart of procedures for each set of related complaints, to determine if they are controls-related. Finally, case studies demonstrate practical problems and their solutions, with tips for each IEQ factor.
