The aim of this publication is to bring together a coherent body of harmonized statistical information on the energy economy in the European Union and the member states, concerning mainly the last year for which data is available, in this case 1998. The information is mostly structured around energy-balance sheets, which are the basic tool for energy analysis. Historical series of indicators show the development of the main energy aggregates for the European Union and for each Member State compared with some general economic indicators and the structural changes which have occurred during the last few years. Key features include: characteristic data of the economy from an analytical viewpoint; an overall view of the principal aggregates for energy and by-products in a common unit, the tonne of oil equivalent; and the historical series for each energy source for the principal aggregates.
