In this revised edition of his study, Manning Marable recounts the achievements of the Rainbow Coalition in 1984-1988 and analyzes the limitations that kept the Rainbow from fulfilling its promise. Marable then surveys the current landscape of African-American politics, marked by the crisis of Black urban regimes and the collapse of liberal integrationism. The book concludes by charting the emergence of a new multicultural democracy in the USA, based both on new demographic realities and the traditions of struggle of the Black Freedom Movement. Marable's updated study ranges over the most recent struggles by African-Americans to achieve political power, assessing the weaknesses, as well as the newly-discovered strengths, of multi-ethnic political coalitions amid economic and conservative counterattack during the 1980s.
