The reward stood at $5,000 for the man who could bring Barbara Davis out of Apache country alive. Lured by the prospect, every outlaw, gunman and scalp hunter in the southwest drifted through Tucson and into the wilderness beyond. Some of them died slowly and horribly at the hands of the Apaches, but still they kept coming. As the killings escalated, Governor Bleke knew that unless the girl was brought out soon he would have a full-scale Indian war on his hands. So he sent for the one man who could do the impossible. A tall, slow-talking Texan who wore his six-guns tied low and looked like he knew how to use them. The name he gave was Green: you only had to take one look at him to that know that he might be a lot of things, but green wasn't one of them.
The Cullanes owned the town of San Jaime body and soul, and always had. Their word was law and God help the man who crossed them. So, when the capable-looking drifter known as Sudden rode into town and tossed the rulebook out of the window, most of the townspeople ran for cover. But, this time, Cullane men died and San Jaime was released from bondage. How long this freedom would last was another question? Up in the mountains, old man Cullane was regrouping his cut-throat crew, rallying them with the order to bring in Sudden...dead or alive!
George Tate was a stubborn man, and he'd sworn no owlhoot gang was going to run him off his own range. Just the same, when the tall, capable-looking stranger rode in, Tate was glad to sign him on with no questions asked. The name the stranger gave was Green. Tate looked him over, and decided that he might be a lot of things, that saturnine newcomer with the tied-down forty-fives...but green sure wasn't one of them!
The Cotton boys owned the town and nothing moved in or out without their say-so. Drifters weren't encouraged and the threat of lead in the air was usually enough to persuade them to move on. All except one: a dark-haired stranger who gave his name as Green. When the Cottons tried to gun down an unarmed kid, Green took a hand against them. Now the Cotton boys were going to make an example of him to the rest of the town. They didn't know what they were taking on, but would soon find out...
