Fun With Sounds and Rhymes offers a variety of activities which will help children to read. Sounds are important because they link how we say words to how we decode them on the page. Rhymes are important because they show there are patterns of sounds associated with patterns of letters. The activities are designed to develop visual perception of individual letter shapes, association of letters with sounds, the difference between different sounds at the beginning and endings of words and the anticipation of common sequences of letters and words. Previously published as At Home with Sounds and Rhymes this new title has been fully revised and updated to ensure it is in line with current Foundation Stage Profile requirements. Fun with Letter Forms offers a variety of activities to help children write letters with confidence. The tracing, colouring, dot-joining activities develop hand-eye coordination, recognition of vowels and forming different letter shapes. Many of the letters are grouped in families (letters of similar shape). As each new letter is introduced, children are encouraged to trace the letter with their finger, say the letter, say the sound it makes and then think of words that begin with this sound.
