Although Sartre wrote several screenplays, only two were ever published in book-form during his life, and of those two, only "Les Jeux Sont Faits" (1947) was actually filmed. This edition, the first with an introduction and notes in English since 1952, locates "Les Jeux Sont Faits" in the context both of Sartre's other dramatic work and of his philosophical and political development. The introduction includes a review of Sartre's discussion of the cinema, a critical summary of the screenplay's genesis and reception, and an incisive analysis of its themes.
The full French text of Sartre's novel is accompanied by French-English vocabulary. Notes and a detailed introduction in English put the work in its social and historical context.
