The Pillars of Society, drama in four acts by Henrik Ibsen, published in Norwegian as Samfundets stotter in 1877 and performed the following year. The play's title initially refers to Karsten Bernick, whose good reputation is threatened by the return to town of his brother-in-law, Johan Tonnesen and of Johan's half sister, Lona Hessel, whose love Bernick had rejected in order to marry her rich half sister.
