This work provides text and photographs of the nationalization years of the Somerset coalfield. The book covers 13 pits which were nationalized in 1947, all of which have now closed.
From hundreds of coal mines in an area traditionally associated with coal, especially in the valleys, there are now only two pits working and some 30,000 men can only reflect on their previous life as a miner. This book consists of the pick of some 7,500 photographs, many taken underground, and of 39 collieries across the coalfield. They portray the very pulse of the area: the pits which were so very much the life blood of the valleys; colliery buildings; men riding conveyors to work; coal cutters ripping out the coal; photographs of the men at work and so on.
John Cornwell runs a mining consultancy company, advising on the location of abandoned mine workings. In this book he draws on his many years experience working in Britain's coalfields to recall the final days of the Somerset Coalfield. The book contains over 85 high quality photographs including scenes taken underground at Kilmersdon, Writhlington and Harry Stoke collieries. Many of the collieries in this coalfield were small - perhaps perceived as quirky by the standards of the super pits developed in the 20th century but they had a quality of their own which shines through in this unique collection
