Well Dressing

by Peter Naylor and Lindsey Porter

Published 1 May 2002
By the end of the 18th century the custom of well dressing in Derbyshire was virtually extinct: only Tissington carried on the practice. It was, however, revived as a celebration of the introduction of piped water. Now many villages have adapted the custom, often reviving it after a lapse of many decades. Naylor, with additional material from Porter, has brought together the history of well dressing both within and beyond Derbyshire. The volume includes a list of villages known to have dressed wells and a detailed account of the well dressing process. In addition to some old drawings of dressed wells and some early black and white photographs, there are colour photographs of dressed wells and of ancient and more modern techniques of well dressing.

Bygone Ipstones

Published 28 August 2009
With nearly 200 illustrations of this Staffordshire Moorlands village covering the area between Consall Forge & Cauldon Lowe, "Bygone Ipstones" recalls people and scenes across a broad spectrum of local life and will appeal to a great number of people both young and old. In addition to the photographs there are a number of trade invoices reproduced, revealing much of interest from long forgotten trades, such as local watermills. There are some buildings that have been demolished and will be fondly remembered by some whose memories stretch back some considerable time. This absorbing book will be wonderful to dip into and stir up memories of "Bygone Ipstones".

This is a comparison of bygone scenes in the Staffordshire Moorlands compared to the same scene today. This book will surprise its readers with the degree of change the area has seen. Some of the scenes photographed 40 years ago now appear very different, while in other places the change is more benign. There are also some exciting photographs from 100 years ago contrasted by more contemporary equivalents. Both nature and man continually alter our landscape, so this book is a useful reminder of the subtlety of one and the more drastic hand of the other.
