Design and Communication

by K. Crampton and M. Finney

Published 19 September 1988
Part of the CDT series, this book looks at designing, design and communication in society, drawing and graphic skills, modelling and related skills, design graphics, basic technology, technical illustrations, computer graphics and engineering and environmental drawing. "Design and Communication" offers options for project work and includes colour sections of illustrations for easier understanding. Each book in the series has been specifically written by teachers of the subject area and cover both the National Criteria and the relevant GCSE syllabuses. They provide the technological knowledge needed to undertake a wide range of projects and so it is assumed through out that the courses are activity-focused. Ideas are developed through all three books in the series and photographs and drawings show examples of the design process in the environment around us. Other features of the book include: a range of graded questions; examples of pupil's own work; a section on project work; a comprehensive index to help pupils work independently.

A design-based course for 11-14 year olds that encourages pupils to use both intellectual and practical skills to solve problems. The aim is to involve pupils actively in craft, design and technology (CDT) by encouraging them to tackle design problems, solve problems successfully and develop necessary skills and knowledge. It involves pupils in a wide range of communication skills, applied decision-making and evaluation, and in the practical skills of manufacturing. The blend of design and design evaluation aims to establish both an appreciation of the aesthetic values and a recognition of manufacturing industry's importance. Independent working practice and pride in work are encouraged. The teacher's book features an introduction to the philosophy, aims and objectives of the course, a course outline, a section on timetabling, guides to project work and assessment, full explanations of all concepts covered in the pupil's book, suggestions for back-up resource material and 17 photocopiable worksheets.
