Soren the enthusiastic and young owl is busy learning the rituals of being a barn owl- First Meat Ceremony, how to fly and of course, about the legendary Guardians of Ga'Hoole. However, his life is quickly transformed when he abruptly falls from his parent's cosy nest to the bare and dangerous forest floor.
Helpless, he is captured by evil chick snatching owls that bring him to St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls, where his identify disappears as he receives a number instead of a name.
Soren quickly befriends another young owl Gylfie, with whom he works to withstand "moon blinking" (brainwashing), and instead develops plans to escape.
But before long, Soren realizes that he in fact has already embarked on an extraordinary adventure with much more excitement in the future.

Ever since Soren was kidnapped and taken to the St Aegolius School for Orphaned Owls, he has longed to see his sister Eglantine again. Now Eglantine is back in Soren's life, but she's been through an ordeal too terrible for words. And Ezylryb, Soren's mentor, has disappeared. Deep within Soren's gizzard, something more powerful
than knowledge tells him there's a connection between these events.
In order to rescue Ezylryb, Soren must embark upon a perilous quest. It will bring him face to face with a force more dangerous than anything the rulers of St Aggie's could have devised - a truth that threatens to destroy the owl kingdom.

Now that Soren has been reunited with his sister, Eglantine, he must face his next challenge: making sense of the mysterious disappearance of his mentor, Ezylryb. When Soren discovers that Ezylryb is in danger, he and his friends Gylfie, Twilight, and Digger devise a plan to save the beloved teacher.
In this process, Soren must fight a ferocious foe who wears a terrifying metal beak, sharpened for battle. It's not until the confrontation is over that Soren discovers the true identity of his opponent. The metal beaked warrior is Soren's evil brother, Kludd.

In the owl kingdom, a war between good and evil is raging. On one side, Soren and the noble owls of the Great Ga'hoole tree. Driven by an all-consuming lust for power, Kludd leads his forces in a brutal attack on the Great Ga'Hoole Tree.
Meanwhile, Soren is asked to lead a mission back to the one place he never wanted to see again - St Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls. He and his crew will have to enter St Aggie's as spies, then leave without being noticed...or caught.
Soren escaped the rocky confines of St Aggie's once. If the Ga'Hoole tree is to be saved he must do it again...

Soren's beloved mentor, Ezylryb, is finally back at the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. But all is not well. There's a war between good and evil in the owl kingdom. On one side is a group led by Soren's fearsome brother, Kludd, who wears a terrifying metal mask to cover his battle-scarred face. On the other side are the owls of the Great Ga'Hoole Tree, who must fight to protect their legendary tree from Kludd's attacks.
Soren, his friends, and the other owls at the Great Ga'Hoole Tree enter into fierce combat against Kludd's forces. They win a major battle, but warfare will continue in Book #5.

Soren's sister, Eglantine, is falling under the spell of a strange nightly dream. Just as Soren notices her trancelike state, the dreams become a deadly waking nightmare that puts the Great Tree of Ga'Hoole in terrible danger.
In the midst of war, Eglantine has unwittingly become a spy for Kludd, leader of the Pure Ones. Brainwashed, she is powerless to prevent Kludd's forces from infiltrating the Ga'Hoole tree - and so a deadly conflict begins...
