Published 29 August 2003
This title is part of a series of three photocopiable maths activity books for secondary schools and home study. Each book contains over 50 pages of photocopiable activities that cover the key objectives of the algebra strand for year 9 at Key Stage 3. Included are fresh ideas for whole-class oral and mental maths starter activities (as recommended by the framework). Each activity is divided into three progressive steps, providing opportunities for differentiating the work. Included also are extension activities which reinforce and develop the pupils' learning. The books are also compatible with the 5-14 Guidelines for Scotland and the Curriculum for Northern Ireland.

Measures, Shape and Space covers the fourth strand of the National Numeracy Strategy Framework for Teaching Mathematics. For each year group, from Reception to Year 6, there is a single book that covers all the key objectives with over 50 original puzzles, games and writing formats.

Using and Applying Maths is a brand new strand for our best-selling series 'Developing Numeracy'. There is one book of photocopiable maths activity sheets for each year of primary school. These books make explicit the skills and processes that pupils need to develop, and provide a wide range of activities and investigations ideal for classroom use. As the dust settles from the introduction of the National Numeracy Strategy, teachers are becoming aware that maths lessons have recently become very content-led. They feel they must now focus more on the skills and processes that pupils need to solve problems and carry out mathematical investigations. Also, a change to the SATs last year saw an attempt to assess these skills through written tests.

This is a brand new strand of our bestselling series 'Developing Numeracy'. There is one book of photocopiable Mental Maths activities for each year of primary school. The books develop pupils' mental calculation strategies through oral and mental maths activities, as required by the National Numeracy Strategy. OFSTED has reported that Mental Maths is still an area of weakness and many schools find their SATs scores are let down by pupils not achieving the required standard in the national Mental Maths test at the end of Key Stage 2. Developing Numeracy: Mental Maths will be of great benefit to these teachers and pupils, and will therefore be a popular addition to the series.
