The two outlaws were on their way to Alfalfa Flat Staging Post to rendezvous with the rest of the Tindale gang when the rangers caught up with them. Ranger Mike Standler thought it would be a pretty good plan if he and his partner, Billy Barnes, pretended to be the outlaws and waited for the rest of the gang to show up at Alfalfa Flats. At the staging post they found an unsavoury piece of work called Carter and a ragged half-starved kid whom Carter was supposed to be looking after. Billy Barnes, though big as a bear and about as ugly too, had a good heart and made a friend of the boy. That friendship would force a terrible decision on the kid and was failed to cause heartache and bloodshed.
