Ephesians

by Dr. David Jeremiah

Published 28 July 2020

Paul's reminder of our identity in Christ.

Ephesus was located in Asia Minor, a region full of spiritual darkness and the site of a clash taking place between Christianity and pagan religions. However, the apostle Paul saw an opportunity to advance the kingdom of God. In the letter to the Ephesians, Paul walks the believers through their spiritual inheritance in Christ. This inheritance moves them from death to life and into God's family - something so much better than anything they had in their former lives. Because of this, they need to "walk worthy of their calling," understand and use their spiritual gifts, and put on the armor of God.

The Jeremiah Bible Study Series captures Dr. David Jeremiah's forty-plus years of commitment to teaching the Word of God. In each study, he will help you understand what the Bible says, what it meant to the people at the time it was written, and what it means to you today. Along the way, you will gain insights into the text, identify key stories and themes, and be challenged to apply truth you find to your life.

Colossians and Philemon

by Dr. David Jeremiah

Published 18 February 2020

The apostle Paul may have never visited the small town of Colossae, located in modern-day Turkey, but he was linked to the congregation through a coworker named Epaphras. This man came to visit Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome to deliver troubling news about destructive teachings that had taken root in the Colossian fellowship. Paul penned a letter in response, urging the believers to experience the freedom they had found in Christ, recognize their salvation came through the Lordship of Jesus alone, and reflect the light of Christ in their lives. Paul also penned a short personal letter to a Colossian believer named Philemon, urging him to forgive a slave who had departed from him and receive him back as a fellow brother. Paul's words in these letters compel us to remember everything that Jesus has done for us and treat others as we want to be treated.

1 and 2 Thessalonians

by Dr. David Jeremiah

Published 12 November 2020

The apostle Paul founded many churches in the Roman Empire, including one in the Greek city of Thessalonica, which he visited during his second missionary journey. At that time Paul had been forced to flee the city, so he sent his coworker Timothy back to check on the congregation. Paul was encouraged at Timothy's report but felt compelled to address misconceptions they had about the return of Christ. In each letter, Paul stressed that Jesus is coming back, that believers who are alive at the time will be gathered to Him, and that they needed to maintain a holy life and avoid idleness as they waited. Paul's words likewise reveal to all believers today that Jesus will return-but that we need to keep doing His work in the meantime.

Philippians

by Dr. David Jeremiah

Published 1 December 1983

Experience joy in any situation.

The believers in Philippi were experiencing both concern for Paul while he was in prison and spiritual discouragement because of these circumstances. Paul wrote this loving letter to encourage them in their faith and to remind them that there was a greater future in store for him and for them outside this world. Paul even admits the tension he feels between living to continue sharing the gospel and dying so he can be with Christ. This mindset allowed Paul to remain joyful in the midst of suffering and he knew the same would be true of the Philippians believers as well.

Galatians

by Dr. David Jeremiah

God's grace cannot be earned...

Follow Dr. Jeremiah through the letter of Galatians in a chapter-by-chapter study that will help you understand what it meant to the people at the time it was written, and what it means to Christians today.

Paul's letter is written to those who had been deceived into believing they had to practice the laws of the Old Testament to receive salvation. Paul is adamant that God's grace cannot be earned, regardless of how many commandments we try to obey. Only our faith in Jesus provides the way to eternal life. "Man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ...for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified" (Galatians 2:16).

This knowledge gives us freedom from the pressure of trying to be "good enough" for God.

Mark

by Dr. David Jeremiah

Published 18 June 2019

Jesus is always at work.

Mark was not one of Jesus' original disciples, but he was present at the birth of the church and had a strong relationship with Peter. After Peter was put to death during the reign of Emperor Nero, Mark decided to record everything Peter had told him about Jesus and create his Gospel account of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. Mark shows us that no matter how chaotic our world becomes, we can always cling to the hope and peace that we have in Jesus. Even in the darkest of times, we can rely on the light of Christ to see us through. And while the path to following Jesus is not always easy, it is always worth it.

Luke

Jesus is the Great Physician.

According to the apostle Paul, Luke was a "beloved physician" who traveled with him on several of his missionary journeys. However, Luke's real passion was in setting down an orderly account that detailed the birth, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This was a task for which Luke was well suited, for he was both a thoughtful man of science and a great observer of people. Luke thus took great care in relating the information he collected, but he also emphasized the care that Jesus, as the Great Physician, extended to people everywhere-both Jewish and Gentile alike. Luke shows the high value Jesus places on rescuing all people from their sins-no matter how "far gone" those people might seem. And he shows how Jesus was willing to give up His place in heaven to come down to earth as a sacrifice for the sins of every person who will receive Him.

God guides our witness and our walk...

Follow Dr. Jeremiah through the book of Acts in a chapter-by-chapter study that will help you understand what it meant to the people at the time it was written, and what it means to Christians today.

In the book of Acts, we have a record of the most fertile period of outreach in the history of Christianity. Churches were planted near and far as Jesus' followers proclaimed the message of Christ. Luke's record in Acts reveals that God places a premium on the spread of the gospel. He blesses our efforts to make disciples of all nations, one person at a time, and sends us His Spirit to guide our words, give us wisdom, and bolster our courage.

We also learn that God is with us even during times of persecution and opposition--and He uses those times to sharpen us and make us effective instruments for His work.

The Christians of the first century were facing a difficult battle. False teachers had emerged in their churches who were spreading a gospel that was contrary to the one proclaimed by Jesus. Similarly, Jude called on believers to remember the truth of the gospel and persevere in the face of these attacks from false teachers.
