" York Notes" are guides to literature in English, covering major British, American, Commonwealth and Third World works as well as English translations of some important writings in other languages. The notes offer literary criticism and advice to students studying and writing about literature. All "York Notes" follow a five-part format: introduction - containing a biography of the author and background information; summaries - general and detailed summaries with textual glossary; commentary - a critical essay; hints for study - advice on study techniques and preparation for exams; further reading - a bibliography. They are designed for GCE A level and GCSE students in the UK and equivalent levels in English speaking countries and for university level students in non-English speaking countries.
