The book describes how and why they save energy and water, recycle their lunchtime leftovers and work to improve the local environment. As well as a glossary and an index, endmatter also includes further suggestions for getting involved.

The book describes the Friendship Squad that makes sure no one is lonely, the Buddy System that helps new pupils settle in, and the Mediators who help people sort out their problems.

Community Helpers

Community Helpers shows Citizenship in practice as the children of Branscombe School in Devon organise and take part in many projects for their local community. They organise several money-raising events to build up a community fund, they plant an orchard to celebrate the Millennium, and they invite all the local senior citizens to a Harvest Lunch. The book shows the children working together, setting goals, expressing and explaining themselves, making decisions and developing skills - all requirements of the Citizenship curriculum.

A Pupil Parliament

Pupil Parliament shows Citizenship in practice as the children of Stanley Road School in Richmond upon Thames take part in that area's Pupil Parliament. Each year, every primary school in the borough elects two pupils to represent them on the Pupil Parliament, which meets three times a year. The book shows the children working on campaigns, holding elections, making speeches and learning about staying fit and healthy.
