It would have been very easy to expand on all the sections of the first edition but I decided to try to retain the relatively short, introductory nature of the book. Some new material has been added, particularly where it has been possible to update data, and there has been some change of emphasis in places, in order to reflect changing world conditions. The book retains its original purpose, however, of introducing systems thinking as applied to agriculture. I am grateful to Angela Hoxey for he...
Forested Landscapes in Perspective
The federal role in the management of nonfederal U.S. forests was once relatively simple: to assist in the prevention and control of wildfires. The administrative structure to carry out this role was similarly uncomplicated, with most programs under the aegis of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In recent years, however, both the management and administrative landscapes have changed dramatically. Responsibility for the federal role in nonfederal forests has been expanded to include a number of...

Manejo forestal de uso multiple en el tropico humedo (Estudio FAO montes)
This paper reports on three regional assessments carried out to identify and draw lessons from on-the-ground initiatives in multiple-use forest management in the Amazon Basin, the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia. In all three regions, information was collected through interviews with country-based forestry experts, forest managers and technicians. A complementary, Web-based questionnaire further examined the reasons for the successes and failures of multiple-use forest management initiatives.
This book sets out to explain forestry in Queensland: how and why it started, how it developed and what it does now. It might seem that growing trees is one of the simplest things to do, but growing forests is not. The text shows how forests, native and plantation, are designed to produce timber in perpetuity and how techniques have evolved from brush hook to sophisticated computer models. Taylor has also published "Patoral Properties of Australia".
