An ENGINEER IMAGINES
An architectural couple with contrasting roots, Graeme Mann from Scotland and Patricia Capua Mann from Italy founded their office in Lausanne in 1990. Since then they have produced a remarkable oeuvre. All of their buildings are developed with consideration and care: for instance, the large multipurpose sports and community hall in Villaz-St-Pierre, which is anchored into the topography, or the striking structure of a secondary school in Gland.

The Ashmolean's collection of European stringed instruments is not large but it is very famous. Several of the instruments in the Ashmolean are among the rarest and most beautiful of their kind and most are, in some way, exceptional. The collection was founded on a group of instruments which was given to the museum by the firm of W.E. Hill & Sons in 1939 and has since been increased by two bequests and by an important group of bows and instruments given by Albert Cooper in 1999. The firm of W.E....
Contrasts and True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture
by A. W. N. Pugin
First published in 1836, Contrasts was the book that rapidly made Pugin's name. It was the first revolutionary architectural manifesto of the nineteenth century and remains the first great canonical work of modern Western architecture. In a devastating text and a series of satirical 'before and now' etchings Pugin contrasted the glories of medieval architecture and its civilised society with the tired classical constructions that were the product of the degraded, modern industrial city....

The Zurich architects Oliver Menzi and Philippe Burgler demonstrate their ability to balance function with their signature reserved style. They skilfully play these attributes off each other, creating attractive public buildings such as the school and sports hall in Matzendorf, and the parish hall in Wurenlos. Similarly, the recently completed new wing at the Felsberg school, Lucerne, is a small masterpiece that shows their mastery of interior space, exterior structure, and precision in detail....

Maximilian I acquired eleven of Durer's works, so the gallery boasts such paintings as the Four Apostles and the Paumgarten Altar. To Elector Max Emanuel we owe the beginning of the Rubens collection, which is now the largest in the world. The Ital...
