The Talon Of The Hawk by Jeffe Kennedy

The Talon Of The Hawk (Twelve Kingdoms, #3)

by Jeffe Kennedy

A HEAVY CROWN

Three daughters were born to High King Uorsin, in place of the son he wanted. The youngest, lovely and sweet. The middle, pretty and subtle, with an air of magic. And the eldest, the Heir. A girl grudgingly honed to leadership, not beauty, to bear the sword and honor of the king.

Ursula’s loyalty is as ingrained as her straight warrior’s spine. She protects the peace of the Twelve Kingdoms with sweat and blood, her sisters from threats far and near. And she protects her father to prove her worth. But she never imagined her loyalty would become an open question on palace grounds. That her father would receive her with a foreign witch at one side and a hireling captain at the other—that soldiers would look on her as a woman, not as a warrior. She also never expected to decide the destiny of her sisters, of her people, of the Twelve Kingdoms and the Thirteenth. Not with her father still on the throne and war in the air. But the choice is before her. And the Heir must lead…

I have mixed feelings about this one. This started off great....in the very first chapter we meet the mysterious Rayfe. I was SO curious about him... he seemed like a jerk but there was something he was obviously expecting to happen that didn't and it made me wonder what else was going on. There was also the mysterious Tala. They seem to be this magical race that Andi's mother belonged to. There was definitely a mystery to figure out there. All of these questions kept me turning the pages because I wanted answers...Who are the Tala? What happened with Andi's mother? Why does Andi needs to return to the Tala? And Rayfe...is he going to be a dreamy prince? or the bad guy?

I think what really ruined it for me was the pacing and the rushed ending. Half the book was Andi trying to escape from Rayfe and traveling to her sister's new castle. We don't even get to see Tala until maybe 75% in. At that point, I looked down and thought to myself...I can't be this far along! There won't be enough time to get all the answers and finish! And that was definitely the case. We're not given the chance to really see and explore the Tala, to learn about the culture, the magic or really anything at all. I was so curious about the Tala, so that was really disappointing. It could have been so amazing. We do learn about Andi's mother and what happened, but it was a massive info dump and then nothing happens with that knowledge. And then the ending, it was so rushed. I could hardly believe that's what happened. Seriously?

This book had so much potential and I really liked Rayfe as well as the other characters. There was just so much that felt unresolved for me. I'm not sure if I'll be continuing this series. While I enjoyed Rayfe and Andi's story (even as rushed and unresolved as it was), I don't think we really see more of them in the next books since they focus on the Andi's sisters. I'm just not that interested to see their stories.
