As much as the hype around the anime is enormous, I decided to catch up on the manga first. It's safe to say I'm confused and staggered by what just happened.
The story takes place about a century ago when man-eating giants called Titans attacked humanity en masse. As a result, the survivors live in high, thick walls and have generally given up on defeating the Titans. All's well so far. The best thing about the manga is how it gives you a real sense of the panic and fear that goes along with an attack by Titans. Whenever the Titans attacked, it was riveting.
Despite all the attacks, the book doesn't spend all its time on them, which is probably a good thing since I'd have gotten stressed out. Here's where it gets tricky. I don't like the artwork. Something is frustrating about the characters. There's a lot of pretentiousness and obviousness in the writing.
The characters seem shallow, and the dialogue often feels forced. Although the plot is intriguing, the execution leaves much to be desired. Despite its popularity, the manga's flaws make it a frustrating read.
Overall, while the manga has an intriguing plot, the execution and character development leaves much to be desired, making it a frustrating read despite its popularity. I won't be continuing this series.
