On a hot summer's day in 1973, law student Christopher Kingstone's life and relationship are torn apart upon discovering the body of his cousin April, violently murdered in her family home in the Liverpool suburb of Crosby.
Four decades later Chris, now a QC living in London, has enough on his plate with a broken down marriage, unruly daughter and bickering colleagues. Just when things might be starting to look up, an unusual package arrives from his late uncle and before long he finds himself returning to his native city to reluctantly undertake the seemingly hopeless task of trying to uncover the truth behind the still unsolved death so long after the clues have dried up.
But as he delves ever deeper into the murky waters of the past, skeletons begin to tumble from closets and as things spiral rapidly out of his control he discovers all too late that sometimes the past should be left firmly in the past.
