Barbara Cole uses photography to play with notions of time, place, and identity. In her numerous series, Cole often asks the questions: how do you paint an image of timelessness? How do you capture the feeling of weightlessness in an image?
Her ethereal photography takes on a quintessential painterly quality, with the transformation of figures a predominant theme in her work. Over the past 30 years, although she works with traditional photographic means, Cole's approach and aesthetic has become closer to that of a painter.
