For many years, both authors have shared a fascination with the tramways of Milan. As one of the world's largest systems, it has enjoyed a rich mix of city and interurban cars and routes, depots, work equipment, streetscapes and backdrops. Also, its remarkable Peter Witt cars are admired worldwide.

For this book the authors have assembled a rare collection of colour images from photographers in Canada, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, UK and USA. Many of the selected views have come from Online Transport Archive, a UK-based charity, devoted to the conservation and preservation of transport-related images. The book sets out to represent each of the different types of motor car and trailer, both city and interurban, operating after World War II in as many varied locations as possible. The coverage ends in 1978 by which time all the legendary Peter Witts had pantographs and were in the new orange livery whilst the last interurban had also run to Vaprio d'Adda. To reach as wide a readership as possible, the text and captions are in English and Italian.
