Stephen G. Miller (1942-2021), late Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of California at Berkeley and former Director of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, presents his 46 years of archaeological discoveries at Ancient Nemea. The text, with nearly 1,800 colour and black and white illustrations, takes us from his earliest on-site efforts to the creation of an archaeological park and the revival of the ancient Nemean Games.
Miller provides details of the most significant of his archaeological discoveries at Nemea. The book is a personal autobiography, a social history with many local anecdotes, a description of the creation of an archaeological park of about 180 stremmata with protective fencing and framing cypress trees, the construction of an archaeological museum and the discovery of thousands of ancient artifacts that have gone into it, the revival of the ancient Nemean Games (www.nemeangames.org), the reconstruction of six columns of the Temple of Nemean Zeus to add to those three that have always stood. His pride is perhaps most obvious as he details the contributions of the local people to the realization of his dream, and their developing pride in their own work as well as his.
