I'm on a bit of a dragon-shifter kick with my reads and I have been entirely intrigued by the way of the dragons. I just finished one dragon series, so I was eager to get into the Fire's Edge series. I received a copy of The Boss, but a friend told me to read this one first. And thank goodness I listened because it did a great job introducing this new world to me.
My goodness, the feels when it comes to finding a fellow dragon mate. I wasn't a fan of what Maddie (and all mates) have to go through when she learns that she is a dragon mate. The whole process is completely ridiculous, but I feel like it's something that will disappear as the series goes on. There have been instances where if you try to mate and it's the wrong one, she will burn by fire from the inside-out. It's absolutely terrifying and rather heartbreaking, if you're on the other end and was certain she was your mate. And don't even get me started on the Council, they're completely nuts, but you can tell that they'll play into this series quite a bit. For years, what the Council says, goes. There's no disobeying them.
When it comes to shifters, I'm used to reading about where the two are nearly certain that they're each other's mates, there's always something instinctual between them. Like they're long lost, friends. And it was quite the concept that Fallon and Maddie weren't on the same page. Fallon knew for sure, but it was a matter of convincing Maddie. Thankfully it was all figured by the end, but I probably could have done without all the in-between.
As I was reading this, I kept getting the sense that I missed a few things here and there from when Fallon and Maddie first met/worked together. Owen explained their previous relationship, but I kept wondering if there was another book/series with these two in it.
As far as novellas go, it was a quick and decent introduction to this series. I'm eager to see what will come with the rest of these steamy dragons and how certain issues will play out. Because the way things are, now, doesn't exactly fly with me.
Can't wait to start the next one!
