Born out of wedlock into a poor working-class family in Aspull, Wigan, immediately after the second World War, Peter Gregory would attend the newly built Aspull Secondary Modern School where an inspirational science teacher would change his life entirely.

Obsessed with science, particularly chemistry, and armed with the equivalent of a honours degree, Peter worked his way up at ICI and AstraZeneca from a Laboratory Assistant to Group Leader. There, he successfully led his group to be the world leaders in inventing and producing ink jet dyes and infrared absorbers. His work was recognised in academia, where he was appointed a professor at the University of East Anglia, and was sought after to speak at prestigious international conferences around the world.

Covering the life of Peter Gregory from birth to present day, Professor Custard reflects the many ups and downs expected of life; it is a mixture of many things. Of ambitions and triumphs. Of failures and disasters. Of love and hate. But most of all, it is a story of the strength of the human spirit to overcome everything to achieve an ambition and a dream. And to never give up.
