This is a marvellously inspirational story about Newlands Junior College, a small educational establishment set up on the south side of Glasgow. For five years the college gave a group of young people who had fallen out of secondary schooling a fresh start and a new direction in learning which steered the overwhelming majority of them on to positive paths in life.
This is also a salutary tale of life in contemporary Scotland. It is the story of the conception of the junior college - as a pilot project - and the efforts to build and sustain it and the disturbing prevarication by Glasgow's local education authority in making a small but significant shift in our nation's education system.
The college was a five-year experiment, costing just under GBP6.3 million over its duration, which proved to be an outstanding success. Everyone involved with the junior college assumed that if the experiment was successful, then its future could be guaranteed. However, this was not the case.
