OHMYGOODNESS!! What a fantastic book! It more than met my expectations, and I am completely delighted to have been able to read it!
"A Summer Pursuit" is the prequel to "The Winter Trail", and a sequel (of sorts) to "Barn Dance", both of which I also loved. Jules Radcliffe has written characters with depth and humanity. They were so...REAL to me. These stories are so much more than two guys who meet, like each other, and have sex. Jake and Ash are so well fleshed out. Details of their pasts are given, and we follow them through every emotion a human can feel.
I don't want to get into too many details about the plot. You'd be reading this review all day, and honestly, you should be READING this book. I'll give you a quick rundown, and you can discover the rest yourself.
The year is 1853, and Jake comes home after discovering his (rich) father has gotten a woman pregnant and married her. She has an older son named Ashton, and there is an instant connetion between the two. Jake is straight...at least he thinks he is. Ashton is a virgin...sort of. One night out on the town together begins a relationships that is occasionally complicated (and beautifully written) but always special. I love their chemistry and intense passion. They cling together with a desparation that you can actually feel in your heart as you read. Oh, how I want to tell you so much more. I just don't want to ruin the experience for you.
Being that it is a prequel to a story that begins with the two of them living together on a farm, the ending is pretty much a given. Getting there though? It's such a rich journey. I know I sound like I'm gushing now, and I'm going to freely admit that I AM gushing. I finished this story last night, and I actually dreamed of Jake and Ash. They are in my head now, and also in my heart. I fell in love with these men as they fell in love with each other. Oh, and I really need to mention that their physical attraction is so powerful. The sex is amazing, off the charts hot, and there is a LOT of it. However, like some stories with a lot of sex, it feels necessary. It's part of who they are as individuals and as a couple. Be aware that each scene is very detailed. There is rimming, dirty talking, and so much more. Never once did I feel like it was too much. I'm gushing again, aren't I?
Please, please read this! In fact, read all three books. Read them RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND! I promise you that you won't be sorry, and they'll wind up in your re-read pile. They're in mine, and for a book to make it there, it has to be something pretty amazing.
