Everything was too rushed. I understand that it's not easy to create and deliver characters and a paranormal world in a novella, and I think that's why most paranormal novellas are part of a larger world with characters you already know - or are just setting it up and introducing them. This tries to do too much in way too little space. The result is awkward shifts from scene to scene, way too hurried pace - to the point where I just wasn't invested in anyone or anything enough to even care.
What's sad - and the reason I give this 2 stars instead of 1 - is that I do see the potential for a great world in here and some pretty cool story lines. I just wish the author had slowed down and given us less of these characters story so that we could get hooked on them and the world.
Unfortunately the narration didn't help - the male narrator had a great voice, but he did not differentiate well at between his male characters. At one point there was a pov change and I didn't realize it because the voice was identical. The rushed pacing of the story created rough transitions that the narration could have helped but only emphasized. The female narrator was fine though, I didn't dislike her at all and would definitely try her again in a story that worked better for me to see if she's one I like more than this story let me see.
