Taken from the BBC book The Story of Martha, by Dan Abnett, ‘Star-Crossed’ is one of four short stories - adventures Martha Jones had with the Doctor that we have never heard before. For a year, while the Master ruled over Earth, Martha Jones travelled the world telling people stories about the Doctor to inspire them and ultimately save them. This tale is told to the Drast, a race of aliens who were in the process of invading Earth when the Master invaded. The Doctor and Martha are exploring a spaceship when they are unexpectedly attacked by armed men. Martha is captured and dragged away, while the Doctor outwits the gang and demands to be taken to their leader. Treve, the Chief Planetary Surveyor, is the head of a group of colonists who had been cryogenically frozen until they reached their target world. But the cryo-system malfunctioned, waking them early. Some did not survive, but to replace them, the ship made genetic clones - Artificials - to perform maintenance checks and deal with emergencies. Now the Artificials are asserting their individuality - and this is unacceptable to the colonists. The two sides are at war: and Treve is planning something very dangerous indeed...
