I won this during a contest, and I’m glad I did!
I kept trying to figure out what kind of magical powers they might be talking out when I first started this, I honestly didn’t think it would be about witches, and I love witch books! I liked how the author made the witches have special powers unique to them too.
Jewel and her family, mom dad and brother, move around a lot to keep them safe. She grows up thinking that her dad did something before she was born for this to happen, like rat out on a mob member. When they end up in her current city just before her 17th birthday, things start to come together.
She starts to make real friends, of which she was forbidden before, and she meets two good looking guys who she likes, Roman and Chase, of whom possibly like her back. Now, technically you could call it a love triangle, but after a bit there’s really no competition for who she chooses, so it doesn’t last long. One guy says he will stay a friend to her too.
During a hushed conversation with her parents and the few family members who are happening to crash at her new house, they hear them call her a Spectral. Not quite understanding, she goes in search of what it may be, including the library. She’s supposed to be a very powerful witch when her 17th birthday comes, and some fear her and want her dead, others want her for their own greed. She has a certain special ability.
Then there’s Roman, saying he’s her guardian and wants to protect her, but she still gets a feeling that something may not be right. With her family and others lying to her constantly, she’s finding it hard to actually trust someone, not knowing who has what intentions.
I liked that it was an independent book, and not part of a series. I think that for the length the story was planned out well and so were the characters, and since most people these days tend to spread that out in many volumes it was nice to just have the one. Jewel was interesting, always listening and following the rules all her life, but finally starting to go on her own and develop into being someone strong for others as the story progressed. Roman and Chase’s description will definitely be something the girls will like, ont eh bad-kinda boy, the other the kind jock.
I recommend this for young adult fans who like paranormal, fantasy and witch books.
