In this book the authors attempt to unravel the mystery and complexity surrounding poetry so that all pupils can understand and enjoy reading it. A variety of types of poem are included - both new and old - which have been specially chosen for their relevance to teenage lives. The poems are divided into themes so that pupils can compare and contrast more easily. Such themes include taking an inside or sideways look at people, familiar sights or situations and prompting the reader to think again or include people looking back and contrasting past and present, the things that change and the things that stay the same. Pointers guide pupils through each poem to set them thinking and discussing. The emphasis is on encouraging pupils to explore their own thoughts and reactions and there are suggestions for writing. Also included are the authors' own responses to the poem, some of them deliberately provocative to encourage reaction and stimulate discussion.
