This text is intended for use by undergraduate and MSc students taking a course in optoelectronic devices, and also for those working in the industry. It provides broad coverage of a variety of optoelectronic devices in current use, and a basic understanding of these devices. The work provides a background on the optical and electronic principles of crystalline solids, and focuses on p-n junction devices and devices that can be formed from variants of the p-n junction. A variety of optically-controlled devices that are either faster than or distinct from electronically-controlled devices are examined. This text also lays the foundations of crystal and nonlinear optics theory and covers diode pumped solid state lasers which are growing in importance since they produce an all-solid state laser with a wider range of applications than flashlamp-pumped solid state lasers. Detectors including array detectors in both the visible and the infrared are discussed. Non-linear optics are covered and developments in semiconductor devices and their uses are overviewed.
A chapter is featured on liquid crystal displays and a list of current manufacturers of devices together with a range of specifications is included.
