Mini-hydro power (MHP) is an important means of generating primary electricity in developing countries, particularly in areas remote from the national grid. In accordance with the UN's definition, MHP is classified as being where the installed capacity of the station is between 0.1 and 1 MW. MHP is a well-developed technology, sided by new design techniques, and is appropriate for both developed and developing countries. This text illustrates how MHP resources can be exploited to provide a clean, cost-effective and renewable energy source. Comprehensive coverage of the design and construction of an MHP station is given, including the financial feasibility of hydrology and hydroenergy design, as well as the geological problems encountered during mini-hydro construction.
