Grandjean's Fitting the Task has become established as the classic and definitive textbook in ergonomics, since it was first published in 1963. Chris Baber now builds on Grandjean's view of ergonomics as essentially the physical and physiological response of humans to the environment in which they work. Yet in recent years the field has also developed in new directions through research in cognitive ergonomics and macro-ergonomics, and this work can be integrated to form a balanced and powerful discipline. Ergonomics is treated as the scientific study of humans interacting with their environment, in the broadest sense, and doing so in the pursuit of purposeful action for themselves or at work. People seek to avoid or reduce physical or cognitive stress or strain, such as workload or upper limb trauma, and if we want to understand this we need to consider the risks they face, the pressures exerted by their job and the design of their environment, as well as human physiology. One strength of the book is its general character and the extensive use of examples and illustrations, and this is maintained in this seventh edition .
The work is presented in a historical perspectiv and should continue to provide a solid and authoritative guide to ergonomics and human factors.
