An old house recently purchased and a full electrical wiring required. It is during this process that the electrician, whilst pulling up floor boards, finds a battered and dusty copy of The Arnold Bennett Calendar published in 1911, five years after the house was built. It felt appropriate on discovering this work to share it again, over ninety five years after first publication. This collection of quotes from Arnold Bennett provides a fascinating insight into not only the mind of the author, but also the late 19th and early 20th century world he lived in. In today's world his view of women for instance will be viewed as certainly sexist and patronising, ironic perhaps as he held the post of Editor of Woman magazine. His insecurity as a writer comes through, but so his view of other authors, and his battle as a northerner in London. Never-the-less it is a fascinating insight and I hope you enjoy it.
