Only two British monarchs have achieved a sixty-year reign (the other was Queen Victoria in 1897) and the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012 is an historic event in every sense. Commemorative souvenirs have been a popular way of marking Royal events such as jubilees for the last three centuries and and this set of original 10 colour postcards by the well known British photographer Martin Parr is an ironic yet affectionate take on the quirkiness of this British tradition.
Through these postcards Martin Parr takes an affectionate and humorous look at the Jubilee theme and the British tradition of neighbourhood street parties. Street parties linked with royal and other national events have been part of British life since 1919: many people still remember the street parties held up and down the country for the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, for her Silver Jubilee in 1977, for Charles and Diana’s Wedding in 1981, for the Golden Jubilee in 2002 and most recently, over one million people took part in their neighbourhood parties celebrating the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in April 2011.
The postcard book is original and entertaining and looks at the British love of commemorating royal events with a street party. The tradition is loved for its ability to build a sense of community spirit at the street level and all ages can meet together and join in the fun and games laid on for the occasion.
The celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee will continue throughout 2012 and this postcard book is an original and humorous souvenir.
