Berta Hummel's charming porcelain figures have been enormously coveted collector's items since the 1930s. But few people know much about the artist, commonly known as M.I. Hummel, and even fewer are aware of her earlier works, which include the surprisingly unsentimental caricatures, sensitive portraits and idyllic landscapes produced during her years as an art student in Munich.
