This textbook examines the way in which bankers make commercial lending decisions. It explains and analyzes the process of lending to large and medium sixed organizations and focuses particularly on small businesses, arguably the most problematic area from a practical banking perspective due to the lack of information on which the lending decision is made. This book describes banking in practice and explores the relationship between current practice and theory. It is informed by the research which the authors have carried out with the banking community over the last ten years. Thorough reference is also made to other practical and theoretical research. There are many case studies which provide an overview of the lending decision. The text is rooted in the practice of banking, with insights into the problems faced by lending bankers and many of the remedies that are most frequently used. More specifically, the authors examine the role and skills of the banker and the information available and used in the lending decision. One of the features of the book is the emphasis placed on the way in which the personal qualities of the borrower are assessed by the banker.
This book should be of interest to students studying for financial services degrees as well as postgraduate banking diplomas and MBAs.
